Microsoft’s new Vista eats your metadata for lunch.

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

It comes as no surprise that Microsoft’s shiny new Vista has some “issues”. Most of my Windows pals know to wait a few versions before they upgrade, and this one is no exception.

Of course there are the usual problems with software that just doesn’t work right with the new OS. Examples are iTunes, and potentially virus and security products among others. That usually happens and we’re not going to go into the long list here,.

Meta data is another issue. For those of us who use it regularly with Photoshop and other imaging software, we know better than to label images with “embarrassing photo from the client number three”, because it’s conceivable that you could accidentally send that image to the client who would then know how you feel about their photography skills. Now Microsoft will allow you to attach metadata to documents, files and folders as well, making searching easier, but the potential for un-expected information exchange of sensitive material has increased.

Critical for us design folks is how Vista handles metadata in digital images. It eats it.

According to Microsoft’s support page, “When you edit the properties of a photo in Windows Vista, the software for the digital camera may no longer recognize the metadata that is automatically added to the photo”. The same goes for Photoshop. If you’ve changed or added metadata tags in Photoshop, Vista may overwrite them.

The workaround is to not use the new spiffy tool built into the OS. Or Windows Photo Gallery or Windows Explorer. Really.

What are they going to do about it? Well, they expect the camera manufacturers to change the way they write metatags. After all, they’re MICROSOFT, why should they change?

Bottom line? Get a Mac.

Flash Learning

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

You know, we’ve been doing more and more product demos and e-learning pieces. We enjoy the opportunity to help people strategize how best to show off their products in demos of all types and flavors. We also like the challenge of creating an new e-learning tool, whether it’s a simple tutorial or training piece ora a full on suite of e-learning courses.

While we will continue to turn out new websites (like the new Ritz and Hess Collection sites), we really look forward to growing Tatu Digital in all kinds of directions in 2007.

Take a look at some of our more recent projects on the Flash Learning website.

Hey, and stay tuned for more tutorials on cool little tips and tricks from the Tatu Digital team!

Tutorial, clearing your disk cache

Monday, February 5th, 2007

Everybody knows we’re Macophiles around here, but still we support multiple platforms and browsers as part of our daily work. One of the most common issues with our clients seems to be not knowing how to clear the cache in I.E. on your PeeCees.
So here’s a quick, down and dirty e-learning tutorial on clearing your browser cache (I.E. on Windows)

What do you mean you’re not a Wowser???

I can’t believe that it’s been almost 10 years since San Francisco Women on the Web was born.

In the early days it was WebGrrls which was a group I really just got involved in before people started leaving and formed SFWOW.

At the time Tatu was just getting off the ground and I had a lot to learn. I started hand-coding HTML in 1993 but the web was exploding now, and there was so much to learn.

SFWOW was a font of knowledge and my tech questions were answered by some of the best and brightest in the Bay area. As time passed I found that I w2as answering questions too. It’s great to be able to give back to the community that has nurtured my growth as a developer and business owner over the years.

In the early days the networking events were legendary. Craig’s list was young and Craig was a great supporter of SFWOW too. He often came to the networking events and the Wowsers supported him too.

Tech workers in the San Francisco area, and soon in the North and South bay, knoew that they’d find great contacts at a PIM (platform Independant Mixer) and have some fun to boot.

Over the years I gave back to the group as events co-ordinator, List Mom, co-list Mom with Kayla the amazing, and even served on the steering crew and a hectic and wonderfully enriching year as director.

SFWOW is an amazing group of over 1800 women working in the bay area. If you’re in technology andv you’re not a member, take a look at the website then join us!
