Stop putting it off

Ergonomic evaluations on your workstation can be expensive. So can NOT doing an ergonomic evaluation. When you spend 8-12 hours a day sitting at your desk you need to think about ergonomics before you start to get sore.
Can’t afford to bring in a specialist right this second? No problem. Spend a few minutes on the Ergotron site, use their free evaluation tool and you could be a big step ahead of Carpal tunnel in just a minute or two.

Website piracy

OK, you built a beautiful website, it’s filled to the brim with tons of useful content. Initially your stats are through the roof and requests for information are pouring in.
Then you get a call from someone who says they are a client, have sent you a check, and they want to know where their product is.
Strange, you never heard of this person, didn’t get a check and don’t know what they’re talking about.

After a little investigation you may find that your site has been hi-jacked, and somebody else is benefiting from all your work.
This actually happened to Tatu Digital not so long ago. Someone had copied the entire site, not changed a thing except some of the contact info and was using our portfolio to get themselves work.
Then we got a call from a very angry executive wanting to know where his website was!

Enter Copyscape. Click on the link and enter your url and they will show you if your site is being copied. It will also show you if your site is being archived on a proxy server somewhere.
They also offer a guide to plagiarism that helps you figure out what to do when your site is copied.

What’s not to like?

How can we not love the J.K. Rowling site? It’s a fun use of Flash with good graphics, a decent load time and tons of content.

It’s so easy to make a difference

The one laptop per child foundation believes that empowering children in developing nations by providing them with laptops in their schools and networking them with the rest of the world can help these children advance their own societies.

The OLPC Association focuses on designing, manufacturing and distributing XO laptops to children in lesser developed countries.
Besides providing the laptops of course, there must be a program to educate the children and teachers on how to use this as a tool for learning. ULPC formed a team to work with countries to develop their own learning teams. The goal is to help each country develop a deeper understanding and richer practice in using laptops for learning. The first workshops in countries will be in Ethiopia, Ghana, Rwanda and Nigeria during October 2007.

Unfortunately the organization is caught in a catch-22 situation. Governments don’t want to make the investment in an un-proven model, and the model cannot be proven unless the investment is made to get the XO laptops into the hands of children around the world.

How can you help?
Well if you are an educator or software developer. You can volunteer.

Or you can buy your child a laptop and get one for a child in who perhaps needs it a little more.

Starting November 12, One Laptop Per Child will be offering a Give 1 Get 1 Program for a brief window of time. For $399, you will be purchasing two XO laptops—one that will be sent to empower a child to learn in a developing nation, and one that will be sent to your child at home.

\So when you’re thinking about buying your kid a computer for the holiday, perhaps you can also think about how you can make a difference, with that one purchase, that could drmatically alter the future of another child, far away.

How about a little MooTools with your AJAX?

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

New ways to use AJAX on your website abound, but which tool framework should you use?
Over the next few posts we’ll share some of our favorites, with examples to things we’ve done, as well as other cool sites out there that use these frameworks too.

MooTools is one of our new favs. The folks at Greening You wanted to add some snazzy to their homepage. Moo Tools gives us a way to dynamically float headlines over the header images and add a pop-up text box to the feature story.
These stories and headlines can be updated by Greening You staff through the Joomla portal admin, so they always look fresh, without having to know a stitch of code.

Got panoramic images on your site and you want a light and easily implemented way to show them off? Check this out. or you can build a sweet little gallery using Mootools.js and Electric Prizm’s Slideshow class for Mootools.

CNet likes MooTools too. In fact, they’re using it to replace some widgets previously done in Flash on their TV site, like their video menus. Here’s a link to MooScroller in case you want to give it a try, and several other nifty projects in development by CNet’s team.

It’s not all graphics with MooTools, oh no. Her’s an example of a WYSIWYG text editor, a calendar date picker, and Suzuki uses MooTools for the text news ticker here, as well as for the feature boxes. There are form vailidator scripts and even some asyncronous form submission scripts.

Next time you’ve got some extra space in your schedule for a little professional development, why not spend some time with MooTools?

Kudos to our team!

We like to think of ourselves as a green business. We do our best to lessen our carbon footprint by buying green products, cutting our paper use to a minimum, and working virtually rather than requiring our staff to commute to work as well as a load of other things. We also like to support public efforts to get the word out about how important individual action can be.

But enough about us. We are proud to release an new online community that can help you get greener in the way you work, live and play.
Greeningyou.com is dedicated to getting the world greener 1 person at a time. Sure you can see what the big companies are doing but you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to make your onw impact on the world.

Greeningu reports new events that affect our world and they also give tips on how you can decrease your own carbon footprint, The site is built on the Joomla Community platform, with a little AJAX and Flash thrown into add that Web 2.0 flavor everybody’s asking for these days.. Although the site’s just taken off, they’re adding content regularly and plan to add more blogs, and online store for green products and a wiki based directory of green product suppliers and solutions.
